Mother's day

Join BCO as we celebrate and honor all Mothers as well as a chance to explore more contemporary works by underrepresented composers, including a female composer with Minnesota ties!

Leo Dworsky
Leo Dworsky is a senior and pre-cantorial student pursuing a Bachelor of Music (BM) in Vocal Performance and Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He has performed with the Mill City Professional Opera, Rochester Symphony, and WCCO Channel Four. Other credits include recent roles like Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff and Dr. Blind in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. In November 2023, Leo performed the role of Podestá in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera with the U of MN Opera Theater. Leo was a Showcase Artist and scholarship winner for Thursday Musical and Minnesota Varsity (Classical MPR). He also has a private studio of voice and piano students.

Fun Facts:

Florence Price was the first African American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra.

Libby Larson is one of America’s most performed living composers. Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2024), she has composed over 500 works including orchestra, opera, vocal and chamber music, symphonic winds, and band.

Born in Costa Rica, composer Vinicio Meza holds a Master of Music Degree in Clarinet Performance.

Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914 by President Woodrow Wilson. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar

According to The National Retail Federation, 84% or people celebrate Mother’s Day, spending an average of $254 per person on Mother’s Day gifts and celebrations!
